After conquering the vacuum market and re-inventing the classical fan Dyson is expanding into the realm of air purification. The Dyson Cool Link Air Purifier fan, combines the company’s Air Multiplier technology, with a new kind of HEPA Filter. This filter captures ultrafine particles. These particles are a major component of air pollution which can lead to allergies.
According to Dyson Engineer Robert Green, the Dyson Air Purifier – Pure Cool is aimed initially at Asian markets. Like China, where air pollution is a major problem. We tend to think of air pollution as being either gases like carbon monoxide, or large obvious solids like soot. The truth is it’s the microscopic particles suspended in the atmosphere that are among the biggest hazards. The reason is that ultrafine particles can penetrate the lung’s membranes. This can cause major damage to the cardiopulmonary system.
“The filtration system in an air purifier is not that dissimilar to the HEPA filters that you’ll see in a vacuum cleaner,” says Green. “So it was a logical step for us to take that technology and apply it to our Air Multiplier range. This combination created this purifier product.”
With its slim and modern design the Dyson Air Purifier looks like the company’s blade-less fans. Biggest Difference is the included 360-degree glass HEPA filter. This filter traps the ultrafine particles from the air. The filter is made of borosilicate microfibers. These “sit” in a “bird’s nest” design with a wrap-around configuration. The aim is to provide a much larger surface than previous filters of similar size.
Dyson combines this new filter design with an active carbon layer. This makes the filter capable to remove odors, fumes, and vapors. Unlike other systems, this active layer is an integral part of the replaceable filter. According to Green, this integrated design produces a more efficient filter that only needs replacing once every 12 months. Dyson states that they made this economically viable by piggybacking on the company’s vacuum cleaner manufacturing infrastructure.
