Ecobee 3 Review – Installation, Possibilities, Guide and Tips:
Ecobee 3 Review
Is the Ecobee 3 the first Competitor to Nest,
who can win the battle?
The Ecobee 3 thermostat with its ‘Ecobee 3 WiFi thermostat remote sensor’ – is the first real Nest opponent. Competing directly for the crown against the market leader Nest Thermostat 3rd generation (read our review). Lets take a look how the battle Ecobee vs Nest ends! -Here you find the Basics of Smart Thermostats-
Previously, Google held the absolute monopoly on the market for intelligent learning thermostats, with its “Nest Smart Thermostat” (actually with the Nest 3rd generation). Nest revolutionized virtually overnight the way, how you hitherto controlled thermostats. Through the ability to learn the behavior of its users, the nest was the first device, to reduce energy costs significantly. By the end of 2014, the previously unknown developer Ecobee hit the market with his Ecobee 3 Thermostat. What first seemed like a clone of the Nest thermostat, showed at a second glance some awesome new features that make the Ecoobee 3 thermostat quite competitive. For larger homes the Ecobee 3 might in some cases even be more attractive – than Googles Nest thermostat. Why? Read on.

Tips and best Price
Installation – Our Ecobee 3 Review showed, that the installation of this thermostat is quite simple. Homeowners with a little DIY know-how should be able to install the Ecobee by themselves within 30-45 minutes. You even find a step by step guide, installation videos and in the box included wire labels and screws for dry walls. You can choose one of the two different trim plates, a smaller or a larger one. This comes handy if your wall has marks and scratches from removing your old device. The Power Extender Kit makes it even easier to install the Ecobee by yourself. The App is available for iOS and for Android – and downloaded quickly. If you want to take a look to the simple 4 Step video installation guide -Click Here-.
Possibilities / Functionality – The first thing that strikes you when looking at the Ecobee 3 thermostat , is its design. Instead of the typical round shape of the Nest, the design is a little bit more influenced by apple. As it is fully Apple HomeKit enabled, it worked smooth with any apple device we tested during our Ecobee 3 Review. No matter if you take your iPhone, iPad or iMac everything matches perfectly. After downloading the Android-App we were positively surprised. Even the Android-Software worked without any issues. It just seems to be a little bit more “constructed” and not so smooth running as the original Apple app. The narrow 3,5″ full-color LCD touchscreen with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixel, shows a quite intuitive iconography.
Focused on a highly functional display system, it shows not only the temperature. The actual humidity, weather forecast can be displayed for your current location as well as a day or night mode. All icons are arranged nice and clear and in perfect order. Compared to the Nest 3rd generation, the display of the Ecobee 3 thermostat is not as clear and crisp. But compared with the Nest Smart Thermostat, the iconography and the display of data is much more intuitive and informative. Both can show you the same, but the usage of the display is more neatly arranged at the Ecobee 3.
Functionality 2.0 – During our Ecobee 3 Review we recognized, that this thermostat has a slightly different user concept compared to the Nest Thermostat 3rd Gen or the Honeywell Thermostat WiFi. Ecobee does not rely so much on his ability to learn, which is one of the main arguments for the Nest. As a self learning device it is quite better than the Ecobee or the Honeywell. But the Ecobee 3 thermostat gives the user above all, the ability to control everything via mobile devices. If you want, even the Apple Watch controls the Ecobee in an easy and intuitive way. With a few clicks, all areas can be monitored and changed via the free Android and Apple app. In our Ecobee 3 Review this clearly was one of the biggest differences and advantage to the Nest. As both wall mounted devices of Nest and the Ecobee stay in their places, you can add up to 32 sensors(!) for all rooms of your home or office to the Ecobee-System. These sensors notice temperature and humidity and monitor the absence of the home owners.
All this data is taken for the calculation of your required, convenient temperature. Controlling the rooms anticipated to longer absences can be programmed with the move or with preset times.
Let your Smart Home know when you come back. Tell the Ecobee, what temperature you prefer and when you go to bed usually. Knowing some basics about your habits, the Ecobee 3 thermostat plans the best settings in advance for you. Of course the device gives you all other features you would expect from a Smart Thermostat. The seamless integration with the Apple Homekit and the real good App for the Apple Watch (better than the Nest App) gives the Ecobee 3 another big plus in our comparison.
Annotations! In all day use we recognized, that the Ecobee 3 Thermostat does really well. When measuring the energy consumption of our heating and cooling system – the Ecobee 3 also makes a decent job, saving energy and money. The only two drawbacks, Ecobee should improve in the next generation of the product, are the Android software (updated regularly and perhaps solved in the near future) and the main fault of the device. The sensitivity of the touchscreen would be another one. We often had to ‘touch’ up to 5 times the display before our commands were correctly recognized. As far as you love convenience without any hassle, we recommend that you controll the device with your smartphone or tablet. This works really good.
The main improvement that the Ecobee 3 Review has revealed:
It offers a significantly better usability in all day tasks then the Nest 3rd Generation. Nearly comparable to our recommended Smart Thermostat the Honeywell WiFi device.
The possibility to connect external sensors for monitoring different rooms and the already near perfect integration of the Apple Watch are awesome big extras and main Pro arguments. In its feature list the Ecobee 3 thermostat has everything you need and is on an equal eye level with its direct opponents Nest and Honeywell! Well done!
As it works with a lot of other Smart Home gadgets it can be integrated in nearly every SmartHome environment. The Ecobee 3 thermostat provides comfort and smart design at a relatively low price. Especially when you add additional remote sensors you can boos your convenience and the efficiency of the system. In our test it made a good job saving energy and money.
So can we recommend the Ecobee 3 Thermostat?
Yes and it will be interesting to watch who will win the battle for the crown of the market for smart thermostats. Nest, Honeywell and Ecobee have all their Pros and Cons, but with their newest generation, they are all nearly on eye level.
This is also true for their actual exchangeable price tags. If you are looking for a real Smart Thermostat and have multiple rooms to monitor, the Ecobee3 Thermostat possibly will convince you.
