What are Smart Door Locks?
Even called – WiFi Door Locks?
A Smart Lock is a full automated locking device, which can not only grant access to your home, but also be locked and unlocked from nearly everywhere with a fingertip on your smartphone. The latest generation of smart locks even can open your door full automated just by touching the lock with your finger – as long as you have a certified device with you. This can not only be your smartphone. There are smartkeys, smart wristbands, chipcards or other devices. Read down below to get ideas how you can integrate these smart devices in your all day life.
A lot of these door locks differ in the possibilities to enter your home.
Quick overview over the main Entry Methods:
RFID, Keypad, Biometric, and Bluetooth
Most electronic smart locks accompany one or more methods to grant access. These incorporate RFID, keypad, biometric (unique fingerprint or eye scans), or Bluetooth.
Keypads were found especially at early electronic locks with a pin number for passage. Keypads are still prominent, despite the fact that more up to date models use touchscreen boards rather than real buttons and incorporate security elements to keep thieves from stealing the code.
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) locks utilize a key fob or card for granting access. With RFID innovation, you might not need to expel the key from your pocket or bag, which means no more oblivious searching. Best no need to attempt to discover your keys when your arms are full, to enter your home.
Bluetooth-empowered smart door locks work a comparable way. Detecting your cell phone’s Bluetooth ID and opening when you approach. Most Bluetooth and RFID bolts additionally utilize an optional method for electronic passage. If your battery bites the dust or you lose your key fob or bluetooth device.
Biometric passage utilizes unique fingerprint recognition to distinguish proof to open the lock. A lot of you might know how to use these devices as more and more Smartphones utilize fingerprint recognition. You simple program the fingerprint of all people who are granted access to your home and the system knows whom to open.
At the point when Electronic Locks Get “Brilliant”
Some smart wireless door locks can open remotely by means of an app. They also can incorporate with your home automation framework. You can include security and surveillance products, putting them in the class of “smart” innovation.
For instance, if your home security system identifies a surge in your cellar while you’re on an excursion and sends you an alert, you can call your neighbor to go and take care of the issue. You can grant your neighbor access remotely from where ever you are and lock after he left your home. You even can grant access for craftsmen or family and friends without being present.
These smart door locks could be a good starting point for your smart home system. They even can work together with your existing home automation devices. This will increase your level of smart home convenience.
Security of Smart Door Locks
The most asked questions!
The most important task!
How about picklocking? A Secure and Safe Feeling – is a must for any home owner! Most smart locks are as safe as any other, good door lock – even safer due to the fact, that the best devices can not be pick locked! You also can setup your device to send you an alarm-message, when someone unlocks the door; you even can see who enters your home.
What if Someone gets his Hands on my Smartphone or I Lose it? First: You also could lose your keys so this is no problem of a smart device. But an additional great argument for a smart or WiFi door lock is: Losing the keys from a traditional lock means – installing a complete new door lock! Losing you Smartphone means – No Problem: As your device is ‘smart’ and can be controlled from any computer by accessing your account; you can withdraw access-code for your lost phone. Feeling safe and secure again effortless. With some of the smart door locks you even can connect to your wifi door lock via phone-call to send commands.
So I strongly recommend a smart door lock to improve safety and convenience. Besides the switches and sensors from our How to Start – The Easy Way! – guide, a keyless entry door lock is one of the basic items for your home automation masterplan. The Best Wireless Door Locks!
Review Kwikset Kevo Smart Lock
vs. Yale Keyless Connected Smartlock
vs. OKIDOKEYS Smart Lock
Like always when you search for the best home-automation products, there are so many different possibilities, with a bunch of different technical requirementes you have to check, if you want them to match and connect with your already existing products. We compare took a close look for you on: installation, functionality, security, user experience, possibilities – over all customer value. Let us give you a brief review of the the best Wifi door locks.
Excerpt: Review Kwikset Kevo Smart Door Lock (keyless bluetooth, latest generation 22.08.2015)
Our own experience with Smart Door Locks and user feedback is ambivalent. The overall impression, the ideas and the given possibilities of Kevo are really good. BUT – In all day life we often experienced, that the connection with our devices via bluetooth did not always work. Often we had to take our Smarthone out of the pocket and hold it somewhere near the Kevo to get a working connection; even sometimes had to open it manually because it wasn´t working. This completely smashes the typical ‘keyless entry door lock – experience’ you want to achieve with a device.
As it is said, that the latest version of the Kevo Smart Door Lock works with Android 5.0 and nearly any Apple-device, we experienced, that the connection via iPhone 4 to 6 works more often. Kevo already declared that they are constantly improving the Android APP.
Conclusion for these Smart Door Locks:
A good stand alone solution (not integrated in a home-automation) especially for the iPhone user (can change with next Android App-Update).
Product: Kwikset Kevo Smart Door Lock
Warranty: This product comes with a lifetime mechanical and finish warranty
My Rating: 7 out of 10

Review Yale Keyless Connected Door Lock
(here: Yale YRD240-ZW-619)
Our own experience and user feedback is really good. Mostly anyone we talked about would strongly recommend this keyless door lock to friends and family which speaks for itself. Like always in all day live not everything is 100% like the idea behind a device. Battery life is quite poor especially if you use the z-wave device so rechargeable batteries should be your choice. The feature that you can empower the lock with a simple 9V-battery if power is down is awesome and another feature that stands out in the market. The Yale App is good, but not specific programmed for the use with ‘only’ the Wireless Door Locks from Yale but with their whole home-security products. You can find a simple Yale product overview here.
One of the best Smart Door Locks available especially the security standards and z-wave integration, for connection to existing home-automation, are real big assets when comparing to other keyless entry door locks. Perhaps the only thing missing is a bluetooth connection for automated access without an additional device.
Warranty: This Keyless Door Lock comes with a lifetime guarantee on the mechanical operation and on its finish.
My Rating: 9.5 out of 10
