The new Google Nest Review
Comparison Thermostat 3rd generation
vs. Nest 2nd and 3rd generation
A thinner, sleeker design. A bigger, sharper display. The 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat looks more modern. With so called Farsight, it lights up when it sees you coming and shows you the time or temperature from across the room.
And the Nest Thermostat 3rd generation is proven to save even more energy – so it is said to save its own cost within 1-2 years. If you want to know how it succeeds – here is our review for you. If you want more information about Smart Learning Thermostats: What a smart thermostat is and if it is better than a normal, programmable device. Google Nest Review
Thermostat 3rd Generation
The Nest Thermostat 3rd generation has definitely improved. The biggest difference to the Nest 2nd generation is the much better ‘waking up’ when you get near your device even only walking in the same room. A useful feature, especially when the clock on the display is on for more convenience. On the much larger display, the crisp, clear text is much easier to read then the last generation.
According to nest the self learning possibilities have improved since the previous generation. It easier detects when you leave and you never heat or cool your empty home. The Nest thermostat 3rd generation learns the temperatures you like and creates a custom schedule for your home.
During our Google Nest Review the thermostat automatically turned itself down after leaving the room. You’re not heating or cooling an empty home. You can control it from anywhere using your phone, tablet, or laptop.
And energy history lets you see how much energy you use and why. In independent studies, Nest saved an average of 10-12% on heating bills and 15% on cooling bills.
‘That means it can pay for itself in under two years.’ so it is said by Nest. Our own experience with the previous model would hint, especially if you already had a normal programmable device, that about two and a half years is realistic. Of course if you had no programmable thermostat at all, it will pay off in the first year easily.
Before You Buy Your Nest – we strongly recommend that you check the compatibility of your heating environment. Go to http://nest.com/works here you can check if the Google Nest Thermostat 3rd Generation matches for you.
Installation – of the Google Nest is pretty easy. You can not expect plug an play like with other home tech devices, because you have to connect different wires. But everything is perfectly labelled and described. An average beginner should install and setup the Nest thermostat 3rd generation in about 20-30 minutes. Google Nest even has an integrated bubble level as you can see in the picture. This makes the wall mounting more easy.
You find easy to follow installation video for your Google Nest if you need (but we don´t think so) – Installation video Nest Thermostat-. After installing the hardware you have to connect it with your WiFi – router and download the Nest-App. We checked for our Google Nest Review the availability for both iOS and Android. Create a free account by entering your data in the app. Then simply follow the steps in the display to provide the Nest Thermostat 3rd Generation with a few basic information about your home. Done – start saving energy and money.
Functionality / Possibilities – at least there are the functions you will expect from a smart thermostat to save energy. During our Google Nest Review we even tried possibilities you probably would not expect. With the Nest you can: Auto-Schedule – Just turn it up and down. It learns the temperatures you like and creates a schedule for you and it gets better to match your wishes with every time you use it. When you change settings manually look in the Display for the Nest Leaf. It appears when you choose a temperature that’s energy efficient, so you know you will save more money.
It also saves money with Auto-Away. This feature automatically adjusts the temperature after you leave. You don’t heat or cool your empty home any more!
If you want to know how much energy you consumed in a period of time, take a look in the Energy History. Check your Nest-App on the phone to see how much energy you use and why. These information helps you to define your settings more precisely and optimize schedules. The App also provides you with full Remote Control of your Nest. Wherever you are, you can adjust the temperature with the Nest app on your phone, tablet or laptop. Start heating or cooling your home if you come home early to your most convenient temperature.
Connecting to your Home Automation system – If you want to control the Nest device with your voice you can buy a Voice Control home automation device like the Amazon Echo or you can simply connect the nest with Google Now and control it with your voice via a smartphone, tablet or pc – it is easy.
You can check the following link to see -Which home tech connects to the Nest Thermostat 3rd Generation?- So you can connect your Nest with the -Philips Lighting Hue- or with the -Kevo Smart Door Lock- to auto schedule different actions when nest detects that you leave home or comming back. These possibilities worked seamless during our Google Nest Review.
Useful Add-on we strongly recommend – If you want to enhance the safety of your home and the possibilities of your Nest, you can buy and connect Nest Protect 2nd gen. If Nest Protect detects dangerous smoke or carbon monoxide gas (invisible for the eye!), it can tell the Nest Thermostat to turn off the furnace – a common source of CO leaks. This is a massive improvement of safety for you and your family. You also get an alarm on your phone if dangerous gas is detected. It is recommended to have at least one near the bedrooms and one near the room of your heater. Creating a safe – secure and convenient environment, which lets you live with an eased state of mind. Live – and let your home do the work for you. That is what Smart-Home home tech should be all about.
Google Nest Review
– Conclusion –
Can we recommend the Nest Thermostat 3rd Generation? As the 3rd generation of the Nest has improved in convenience and now connects with a whole bunch of home automation devices (see Connecting to your …. above) we recommend the product for your home automation system or even as an energy saving solitary Smart Device. If you experience any problems installing or programming your Google Nest, you can even check our IFTTT – Guide for more possibilities; or leave us a comment at any time.
It is easy and intuitive to use, even completely on autopilot. If you want the Nest will help you save energy and money learning your behaviour.
Connected to the Nest Protect it is a system that keeps track of your heating and cooling and an eye on the safety of your family. If we compare the price of the Nest 2nd Generation about $178 (Amazon) and the new Nest Thermostat 3rd Generation for $220 we think the benefits from better Display, better Far-Sight and better connectivity are worth the extra 40-50 Bucks. Especially when you keep in mind, that the energy saving and self learning features improved since the last generation.
